This PowerPoint is describing where the food we eat comes from. However, during the past few weeks my group have discussed that most of the foods we eat aren't grown locally.
As we are coming to an end of the program we have finished up our last portfolio training session and we have learned so much during the last 4 weeks. However, yesterday on August 3, 2010 we discussed Resumes and cover letters that can be helpful for us in the future when we began to apply for long-term careers. Overall, even though I knew majority of the things we were being taught I can at least say it came in handy.
As we become more aware of the things that we have to do with the green works program our work progress has very much improved. However, last Friday we went to the Fresh Grocery store and I learned quit some thing s about a fresh grocer vs a regular super market. For example, I noticed that on the fruits and vegetables that most of them were locally grown in the USA or imported from a different such as Mexico(Limes, mangos), Costa Rica(Pineapples), Argentina(Bosco pears), and Ecuador(Bananas). For the most part one thing that I can say is that buying from a fresh grocery store isn't just healthier for the people and the environment its id also more affordable.
Yesterday on July 29, 2010 my group and I went on a field trip to the framers market up on Cecil B. Moore st near Temple University campus. In addition, at the farmer's market there were a few Temple Students their that were selling organic foods that they grow everyday in a community nearby the campus. They decided to create this garden because they want to help make our city a better place to live in be eating and providing healthier foods. However, one of the students explained that having local food isn't just good for the people in our communities, but it is also good for the environment because most of our fruits and vegetables are transferred from a 150-mile radius or in some cases even further, in other words, she informed us that when it takes that long for fresh fruits and vegetables to travel to the grocery store it wouldn't be considered as healthy as it would have been if would have came locally. As a result, by the time it gets to the stores there is no more nutrition left in the fruit or vegetable.
As we go further into the program we are learning and experiencing different opportunities that are changing our mind sets on things in life. On Wednesday July 21, 2010 Former Mayor John Street came to Temple University to share some words of wisdom with the Bits Interns. However, even though he made his presentation fun and exciting he made some very good points to everything that he was explaining to the Interns. On top of that, Mr. Street was informing us that life is not based on luck everything that you do accomplish must be earned not rewarded. As a result, Former Mayor John Street left the Bits Interns with a saying, "If a man or a women stops to throw stones at a barking dog will not complete its destination", meaning there are many distractions in the world that can take you off focus, but it's up to you to keep on moving.
During our second session in portfolio training we did three blogs on goals, three colleges that we would want to go too and a thank you letter to an employer of the Bits internship program. However, one of our main discussions was that we had to write what are our long-term goals and is it a smart goal. On top of that, along with our goals we had to find colleges of our choice and what is about the university that interests us. For example, the activities and/or the major entrance that you want to explore. Furthermore, as we go more into the sessions I am finding them very helpful for college and for the real world when I have to apply for a job that will be my long-term career.
As we go further into the program there are many things that we are learning and experiencing. In addition, today on July 16, 2010 my group was introduced to a film/documentary of Philadelphia which was called " The Holy Experience". This film was describing how the Green works of Philadelphia was created and why is it so important to our communities. However, there were many thing about Philadelphia that I had no idea about, for instance, Philadelphia had the first hospital, the first museum, he first theatrical theater, the first anti-slave movement and one of the greatest moments about Philadelphia was when Bess Ross made the first American Flag of the United States of America. For which some may not know that Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is one of the greatest landmarks and has different organization wanting to find and create many ways for Philadelphia to remain and even grow to be a better the place .
On top of that, Philadelphia also started the first Flower Show that has been going on for 175 years and has the one of the largest landmarks to protect their natural areas; FAIRMOUNT PARK. As a result, their have been many people that have helped to making our city a get place and also helped a lot of young students to better their time instead of being on the streets.
Today on July 15, 2010 my group and I went on a mini campus tour to see where all of the food courts, food trucks and food stands were located within the campus. During the tour we each had to draw a map of our own, to eventually collaborate and make a bigger one to present, but unfortunately the whole process didn't go as a well as planned. In other words, people were getting frustrated and upset because everybody did have the same things, but have them located differently on the map so that caused a difficult situation. However, having some on task and some not doesn't do our project no justice. As a result, after !:00pm the mapping process was making sense, but as of right now we had to put that thing on the side until another day.
On July 13th the Green works group of the Bits program had a portfolio training session that discussed how to conduct yourself when at an interview, for instance, knowing how to fill out an application for a job, how to begin a resume, what are some of the reasons why people don't get the job they desired for and how to dress for success. However, we started out with a primary introduction of what we will be doing in our portfolio training sessions fro the remainder of the program. On top of that, our instructor informed our group that the reason of this training is to help us as young adults to prepare for the workforce and so on. In addition, we watched a short slide show on how important it is to know the three interviews which are Gut, Behavior, and Conversation. In other words, these three interviews describe how people get chosen for a job and why some people don't get chosen for a job. In the end, we explained what SMART means when planing your future.

The Bits Summer Intensive program is known as the Building Information Technology skills for students to engage in many different fieldwork opportunities. However, my group is involved with green-works Philadelphia where we want to find out where Temple University supplies its food from and also, to get the students to think critically about the nature of current methods of food and production and distribution within Temple University campus and its community.
Within our group we have discussed that Going Green is Eco-Friendly or to allow or help our inner communities become better places to live by recycling more, cleaning the streets, providing better health food at the local corner stores and by using less energy for the environment. In addition, we explained that sustainability is the capacity to endure in the ecology of our environment; which can also be explained as helping our environment by controlling the bad habits that effect our communities.
My name is Deidre D. Smith and I am 19 years old. I graduated from Murrell Dobbins High School ranking in at number six in my graduating class and with a License in Cosmetology. On top of that, I remain in an active role in the National Honors Society and the Blue and White Society. In addition, I was also a starting soccer player that went all public two years straight and for also making the 1st team all-public and all-star game. Therefore, I became the 2009 MVP and Scholastic-Athlete of the year. As a result, I attend Penn State University pursuing a career in Health Policy Administration.
The Bits Internship program is defined in many terms, but for right now I am apart of the Green works Program, which is responsible for food aseptic within Temple University and its' neighborhood. As a result, we will be making sure that Temple University is getting the proper food distributed within the campus. Also, we want to find out where are the food being supplied from for instance, what country, state or city and are there healthy providers in our communities within the inner food marts.
